Tucumán, a small province in northwestern Argentina, is divided between the Andes mountains to the west and the Gran Chaco lowlands to the east. The capital, San Miguel de Tucumán, is considered the cradle of the country. The Historical House of Independence museum is the place where the country declared itself independent from Spain in 1816. Tucumán also has archaeological sites, such as the Quilmes ruins, a settlement dating from the 9th century.
